How to get an OpenRouter API key

August 1, 2026·2 min read

OpenRouter gives you one key that can call almost any model from any provider — handy if you want to try several without signing up for each one separately.

Steps

1

Go to OpenRouter

Open openrouter.ai and sign in with Google or GitHub.

2

Open your keys page

Click your avatar (top right), then Keys — or go straight to openrouter.ai/keys.

3

Create a key

Click Create Key, name it "TalkingSheet", and confirm.

4

Copy it immediately

Your key (it starts with sk-or-v1-) is shown once — copy it before closing the dialog.

5

Add credits

OpenRouter is prepaid. Go to Settings → Credits and add funds before your first real request.

Now add it to TalkingSheet

Open the add-on sidebar → Settings → turn on Use my own API key → pick OpenRouter → paste your key → Save. Your key stays in your own Google account's storage — it never touches TalkingSheet's servers. See how BYOK works for details.
